The year 2018 will go down in history because of first
official department of New York MoMA in the village, in Bulgaria, in Staro
Zhelezare. It is a phenomenon on a global scale, all the greatest works of art
from the MoMA collection will be available for permanent viewing to the village
audience, in the open gallery, in the rural space.
Here, they will gain a new life, extracted from closed spaces and the museum's archive, for the first time in history there is the possibility that the Museum's collection will not only be made available to the poorest, but also least mobile due to biological or economic conditions as well; just to reach directly their door.

This summer, a team of Polish artists led by the
Polish-Bulgarian curatorial and artistic duo Katarzyna and Ventzislav Piriankov
will work on the rural walls over the entire two months to transfer the MoMA
collection to Staro Zhelezare.
Grandma Velika, grandfather Ivan, Shaban, Janko and Ali from
the Gypsy district, will all have the opportunity to become acquainted with the
clocks of Salvador Dali, rural paintings of Chagall, Marylin Monroe and Warhol
cans, Duchamp bicycle wheel, Pollock's abstraction, White square on white
background by Malevich.
We leave the project open,
with a space for creative improvisations and interpretations during
summer, related to current situations, contexts, which will most likely also
result in unforeseen, unplanned things from A to Z, related to the current
context, that will not only be worth to include in murals projects, but which
will give them unique, authentic added value.
The festival is a continuation of the main thoughts and
slogans of previous editions - "Art for Social Change ","
Village of Personalities ". This time, portraits, images of local heroes,
villagers will appear in the company of selected works of art, or personalities
that are their heroes. And so in the proposal from our side we will find, for
example, 'Sleeping Gypsy' by Henri Rousseau, ‘Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' by Picasso,
a self-portrait of Frida Kahlo, 'Drowning girl' by Lichnenstein - described as
a 'masterpiece of melodrama', and is one of the artist's earliest images
depicting women in tragic situations, a theme not unknown to many village
women.
The effect of this action can be spectacular, not to say
phenomenal, it can be the most artistically educated village in the world! We
hope that the next summer, the majority of grandparents and grandmothers who
walk with limps, Gypsy families, will be experts of Warhol, Chagall, Malewic
and Rothko.
The idea of transferring art from the hermetic world of art
celebrities and bringing it to the level of sheep shit, tomatoes, rural working
uniforms, sounds quite absurd, but it is a chance for art to face the brutally
authentic, virgin environment of art audience. We will check how this collision
of two worlds will pass the exam.
The potential of large art centers in
cities has been exhausted, the environment and recipients blasé, themes
exploited, as never before new source of energy and refreshment is needed.
Even if it was a dying village with old people and a gypsy
minority at the end of the world. There are here more unused values, dug
contents, buried emotions, valuable things that can be humbly revealed by the
inhabitants of cities, players of the great world. Many values have been
discredited in the last years of history, contemporary art too easily falls
into the trap of political games and the ideas of political correctness,
getting rid of healthy distance, independence, free field for interpretation,
new visions, solutions. The village no matter in which condition it was, keeps in
dugouts, among cans and jars, sacks with beans, bent and cured stocks of not
necessarily logical and explainable mythical tools , uncontrolled and
unexplained emotions, new old ways of coming together and dealing with reality.
The previous summer we started revolutionary activities in
the village, we called for the rebirth of the avant-garde in such
circumstances. Going one step further, we are moving towards a revival where
the somewhat lethargic role of the traditional Chitaliszte will be taken over by
the Museum of Modern Art. Today's chance for ART to break into life could be
the kind of SOCIAL COLLAGE, stuck together from completely different sections
of reality.
